Representações multimodais da mulher secretária no discurso da mídia do Brasil e da Inglaterra: questões de gênero nas traduções culturais

Abstract

Compreender que as culturas representam o mundo por meio da linguagem (HALL, 1973) e a partir de diferentes modos semióticos permite-nos perceber a tradução como representação multimodal e cultural. O presente estudo, a partir de abordagens culturais em tradução (VERMEER, 1986; BAKER, 2003; PYM, 2009) e principalmente do conceito de tradução como representação cultural proposto por Zipser (2002), tem como objetivo analisar como profissionais de secretariado são culturalmente representados/as no Brasil e na Inglaterra. Essa profissão é frequentemente estereotipada nas mais diversas práticas discursivas (LUGLI, 2015), sendo os veículos de comunicação um dos principais responsáveis pela disseminação das representações socialmente construídas, as quais, por sua vez, perpassam pelas questões de gênero. Assim, para o estudo dos dois ambientes culturais mencionados, utilizo algumas categorias da Análise Crítica do Discurso (MARTIN; WHITE, 1995; CALDAS-COULTHARD, 1996 1999; 2013; 2016; VAN LEEUWEN, 1996) e da sócio-semiótica visual (KRESS, 2010; KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2001; 2006, MOTA-RIBEIRO, 2015), articulando minhas discussões e análises aos Estudos de Gênero na linguagem. A presente tese oferece, então, subsídios para que tradutores/as, estudiosos/as da linguagem e comunicadores/as, de forma geral, compreendam como construções multimodais organizam-se na construção dos significados, afetando-as simultaneamente. O estudo aponta que, para o uso e a análise de imagens e outros recursos visuais no âmbito dos Estudos da Tradução, torna-se fundamental o desenvolvimento de uma competência visual crítica, que contribua para as discussões relativas a questões de gênero e para a análise de representações culturais no domínio de traduções multimodais.

Understanding that cultures represent the world through language (HALL, 1973) and from different semiotic modes allows us to perceive translation as a form of multimodal and cultural representation. The present study, based on cultural approaches to translation (VERMEER, 1986; BAKER, 2003; PYM, 2009) and on the concept, proposed by Zipser (2002), of translation as cultural representation, aims to analyse how secretarial professionals are culturally represented in Brazil and in England. This profession is often stereotyped in different discursive practices (LUGLI, 2015) and the media are responsible for the dissemination of socially constructed representations, which include gender issues. Thus, for the study of the two cultural environments mentioned, I use some categories of Critical Discourse Analysis (MARTIN, WHITE, 1995, CALDAS-COULTHARD, 1996 1999, 2013, 2016, VAN LEEUWEN, 1996) and visual social semiotics (KRESS, 2010; KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2001; 2006, MOTA-RIBEIRO, 2015), articulating my discussions and analyses with categories of Gender Studies in language. Therefore, the present thesis offers translators, language scholars and communicators, in general, an understanding of how multimodal texts are organized in the construction of meaning and how this affects them. The study points out that in order to use and analyse images and other visual resources in Translation Studies, it is fundamental to develop a critical visual competence that may contribute to discussions on gender issues and to the analysis of cultural representations in the field of multimodal translations.
