A sequência de ocupação do Ex-Albergue Distrital (Braga, Portugal)

Abstract

Este artigo visa a analisar a sequência de ocupação registada nas escavações realizadas na área arqueológica do Ex-Albergue Distrital, em Braga. Os trabalhos de arqueologia preventiva aí realizados permitiram identificar vestígios integrados num quarteirão da cidade romana, pertencentes a uma domus, construída na época flávia, que se dispunha a nascente do cardo máximo. Foi igualmente possível identificar as reformas operadas na domus nos finais do século III/inícios do IV, a progressiva alteração dos espaços da habitação na Antiguidade Tardia, bem como os sucessivos saques dos muros do edifício realizados na Alta e Baixa Idade Média associados à construção das cercas medievais erguidas nas imediações da área intervencionada.

This paper aims to analyze the occupation sequence recorded in the excavations carried out in the archaeological area of the Ex-Albergue Distrital in Braga. The rescue archaeological works allowed to identify remains integrated in a block of the Roman city, belonging to a domus built in the Flavian period, settled at the eastern side of the cardus maximus. It was also possible to identify the renovation of the house in the late third/early fourth century, its progressive change in Late Antiquity, as well as the successive plunder of the walls in the Early and Late Middle Ages associated with the construction of the medieval walls erected in the immediate vicinity of the excavated area.
