As habilitações de genere e a seleção de membros do Cabido da Sé do Porto (1625-1780)

Abstract

Esta dissertação teve como intuito a análise das habilitações de genere na diocese do Porto entre os anos de 1625 e 1780, com o objetivo de compreender uma das instituições mais relevantes para o estudo das elites eclesiásticas da cidade, o cabido da Sé do Porto. As habilitações serviam o propósito essencial de escolher novos membros para esta instituição, obrigando os candidatos a demonstrarem a sua pureza de sangue. Este estudo começa por analisar a génese e evolução das habilitações de genere, para em seguida tentar compreender como se processava a seleção de novos capitulares. As fontes utilizadas permitiram elucidar um conjunto de elementos: a estrutura e procedimentos relativos ao processo de habilitação; as dinâmicas de seleção através das relações privilegiadas entre antigos e novos membros; os princípios de transmissão de dignidades; ainda, a importância das testemunhas para o sucesso das habilitações. A análise permitiu concluir a clara preferência do cabido da Sé do Porto por indivíduos naturais da cidade, embora a sua origem social nem sempre seja discernível nas fontes documentais, pelo que a identidade das testemunhas que legitimavam os familiares do habilitando constitui uma das únicas janelas capazes o desvendar. A transmissão das dignidades capitulares podia ser feita de diferentes modos: uma coadjutoria por futura sucessão; uma renúncia; ou óbito de um antigo capitular. A presença de um familiar no cabido possibilitava ao novo membro uma rápida subida na hierarquia, por exemplo através da transmissão da dignidade entre tio e sobrinho. O cabido da Sé do Porto mostrava-se assim um universo exclusivo, inacessível à maior parte da população.

This thesis objective has the purpose of analysing the inquiries of genere on the bishopric of Porto between the years of 1625 and 1780, in order to understand one of the most important institutions in the religious history of the city, the “cabido” of the cathedral of Porto. The inquiries served the essential purpose of choosing new members for this institution, forcing these candidates to prove their blood purity. This study begins by analysing the genesis and evolution of the inquiries of genere, followed by how the new members were chosen. The sources used allowed a better understading of various elements: the structure and proceedings relative to the inquiry process; the dynamics of selection through the privileged relations between old and new members; the principles of transmission of dignities; and the importance of the witnesses for the success of the inquiries. The analysis allowed us to conclude the clear preference of the “cabido” of the cathedral of Porto for individuals born in the city. However, the historical sources were not always clear about their social status, which made the witnesses account about the legitimacy of the family of the new member one of the only ways to discover their status. The transmission of dignities could be done in different ways: a coadjutorship with a future succession; a resignation; or the death of an old member. The presence of a member of the family in the “cabido” allowed the new member a quick ascension through the ranks, for example through a transmission of diginity between an uncle and nephew. The “cabido” of the cathedral of Porto presented itself as a place of exclusivity, inacessible to most of the population.
