Tires are complex high-tech products that cover a large number of compounds, particularly textile reinforcements and rubber. The adhesion between the compounds is one of the main factors for its performance and involves chemical treatments with formulations based on resorcinol-formaldehyde and latex (RFL). However, some ingredients of this formulation result in health and environmental hazards and, therefore, sustainable alternatives have been developed. During the accomplishment of this master’s dissertation, developed at Continental – Indústria Têxtil do Ave S.A., two materials were studied, rayon and aramid, both treated with sustainable formulations. For rayon, the main goal was the calibration, and subsequent validation, of the TD-NMR, an alternative technique to the chemical method, which aims to carry out faster quantification tests of the dipped solution in the fiber and without the need to resort to hazardous chemicals, avoiding possible health issues. However, rayon treated with RFL formulations had already been calibrated at another stage, arising the need to understand if the existing calibration curve for rayon/RFL could be applied to this sustainable material. The statistical analysis proved that the existing calibration curve was not accurate enough, leading to the need for a new one, as expected. The RF-free calibration curve was successfully made, and it is statistically valid. However, according to Continental’s standards, it cannot be implemented. The dipped solutions used for the TD-NMR calibration served to support another investigation concerning this material, the natural aging study. The samples, which were protected from direct exposure to the laboratory atmosphere, proved their stability in terms of mechanical behavior and the amount of solution present in the cord (DPU) when dipped with sustainable solutions. Finally, in response to coagulation findings, numerous studies were made on the rayon reference recipe. The sum of the experiments suggested that system coagulation could be related to possible undesirable secondary reactions between additives (e.g., stabilizers) added to different components. Additionally, a combination of dip ingredients was found that showed increased dip stability while keeping the high-performance level. FTIR-ATR analysis was done further to investigate the coagulate and the remaining dip solution, and no differences can be found in the spectra signals. For aramid, the main goal was the dipping process optimization. This was successfully achieved by temperature and exposure time adjustments. In addition, SEM/EDS were performed to understand the failure mechanism in the specimens with RF-free dipped cords, which shows that the failure occurs essentially between the dip and the rubber. |
