Engenharia climática: poluir para despoluir

Abstract

No contexto de uma poluição crescente as preocupações com as alterações climáticas tornamse prementes. A solução apontada para a diminuição da quantidade de dióxido de carbono na atmosfera, reduzindo as emissões, está longe de ser uma prática corrente, apesar de todos os tratados. Assim, ao problema climático estão associadas questões sociais e humanas que interferem com possíveis alternativas à resolução do problema. A engenharia climática, nomeadamente a Geoengenharia solar, é uma tecnologia apontada como uma solução barata e fácil de usar, mas não está isenta de problemas que poderão interferir com o Planeta de forma incontrolável. Este trabalho procura colocar em confronto argumentos contra e a favor do uso da Geoengenharia solar como complemento para a mitigação das alterações climáticas. Não existe ainda um consenso sobre este aspeto, mas seria importante que não precisássemos de recorrer a métodos aparentemente radicais. Seria, na verdade, preferível que os humanos passem pelo Planeta sem o alterarem de uma forma definitiva.

In the context of increasing pollution, concerns about climate change become imperative. The solution aimed at reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and reducing emissions, is far from being a current practice, despite all the agreements. Thus, the climate problem is associated with social and human issues that interfere with possible alternatives to solving the problem. Climate engineering, namely Solar Geoengineering, is a technology publicised as a cheap and easy-to-use solution, but it is not without problems that could interfere with the Planet in an uncontrollable way. This work seeks to confront arguments against and in favour of the use of solar Geoengineering as a complement to the mitigation of climate change. There is still no consensus on this aspect, but it would be important that we did not need to resort to apparently radical methods. It would actually be preferable for humans to pass through the Planet without altering it in a definitive way.
