Da caridade à filantropia: o auxílio aos presos pobres da cadeia de Ponte de Lima no século XIX

Abstract

El presente artículo incide sobre la ayuda prestada por cl Estado, por la Misericordia de Ponte de Lima, por cofradías y particulares a los prisioneros pobres del cárcel de Ponte de Lima, en siglo XIX. Pretendemos mostrar cómo estas entidades contribuyeron a aminorar la miseria de aquellos que tenían que garantizar su subsistencia en el recinto carcelario, así como la asistencia concedida en el ámbito social, espiritual, judicial, y, por supuesto, en la enfermedad y en la muerte.

This article focus on the aid given by the State, the Misericordia of Ponte de Lima, brotherhoods and other people to the poor prisoners in the prison of Ponte de Lima, in the XIX century. Our goal is to show, in what way, these entities contributed to minor the poverty of those in need that had to survive in the prison, as well as, their aid in other domains such as social, spiritual, law, disease and death.
