Moda transgressora no século XX: percursos insólitos de mudança cultural no ocidente

Abstract

A relação entre humanidade e vestuário é primitiva, tanto na sua função de proteção do corpo como na sua função social de estabelecer identificação e diferenciação. A emergência da Moda estabelece um aprofundamento das funções sociais do vestir, já não se referindo apenas ao vestuário, mas sim ao complexo conjunto de elementos que o relacionam aos acessórios, calçado, penteados e maquilhagem. As suas dinâmicas com a sociedade e a cultura permitem abordagens em que o consenso é escasso. Pode, contudo, destacar-se um: a Moda é um fenómeno mutável, manifestado através do vestuário e dos seus complementos de imagem pessoal, nos quais as mudanças tendem a ser acumulativas. Apesar de ser vista como evolutiva, a História da Moda foi, por vezes, marcada por momentos que provocaram choques socioculturais consideráveis, especialmente nos países ocidentais durante o século XX. Esses momentos de rutura protagonizados pela Moda, assim como os seus desfechos estéticos, são o tema central desta dissertação intitulada “Moda transgressora no século XX: Percursos Insólitos de Mudança Cultural no Ocidente”. Ao longo deste trabalho são analisados doze casos que causaram mudanças de destaque no trajeto da Moda ocidental, organizados por ordem cronológica. Na moda feminina, os casos são o fim do espartilho, as roupas desestruturadas, a subida da bainha da saia, o cabelo curto, a maquilhagem, as calças, a minissaia e o biquíni. Na moda masculina, o cabelo comprido, a maquilhagem, a saia e os saltos altos foram os selecionados. Nesta investigação analisa-se como o género pode ser dos principais condicionadores da transgressão estética, como semelhanças visuais entre épocas podem demonstrar existência de valores comuns entre elas, como a Moda deteta ou sugere o percurso ideológico de cada época e como se converte no espelho da sociedade num mecanismo complexo de influência recíproca.

The relationship between humanity and clothing is primitive, both in its function of protecting the body and in its social function of establishing identification and differentiation. The emergence of fashion establishes a deepening of the social functions of dressing, not only referring to clothing, but also to the complex set of elements that relate clothing to accessories, footwear, hairstyles and make-up. Its dynamics with society and culture allow approaches in which consensus is scarce. However, one of them can be highlighted: fashion is a mutable phenomenon, manifested through clothing and its personal image complements, in which changes tend to be cumulative. Despite being seen as evolutionary, the History of fashion was, at times, marked by moments that provoked considerable sociocultural clashes, especially in Western countries during the 20th century. Those moments of rupture led by fashion, as well as its aesthetic endings, are the central theme of this dissertation titled “Transgressive fashion in the 20th century: unusual routes of cultural change in the West”. Throughout this work, twelve cases that caused major changes in the course of Western fashion are analyzed, organized in chronological order. In women's fashion, the cases are the end of the corset, unstructured clothes, the rise of the skirt hem, short hair, makeup, pants, the miniskirt and the bikini. In men's fashion, long hair, makeup, the skirt and high heels were the ones selected. In this research, it is analyzed how gender can be one of the main constraints of aesthetic transgression, how visual similarities between eras can demonstrate the existence of common values between them, how fashion detects or suggests the ideological path of each era and how it becomes the mirror of society in a complex mechanism of reciprocal influence.
