incompatibilidade ideológica, gravidade percebida do motivo do cancelamento e credibilidade da
fonte aparecem como antecedentes da Cancel culture. Por outro lado, como consequências do
fenómeno surgem o boicote, brand hate, negative word of mouth, estratégias de resposta, brand
No entanto, essas duas variáveis nunca
incongruências devido à subjetividade do individuo.
Currently, there is a remarkable ease of acquiring knowledge about a particular brand/company/organization/individual through social networks, which makes it possible for consumers of a brand to feel the duty to communicate what they feel about it, whether it is a positive or negative opinion. In this sense, cancellation culture emerges as a social movement in which users of social networks jointly agree to boycott a given brand or individual, Twitter being the best known for this practice. Ideological incompatibility, perceived seriousness of the reason for cancellation and credibility of the source appear as antecedents of Cancel culture. On the other hand, the consequences of the phenomenon are boycott, brand hate, negative word of mouth, response strategies, brand forgiveness and purchase intention. The methodology used is characterized by a quasi-experimental design, using an online questionnaire, in which a severity level (high) was tested for three different response strategies (no comments, apology, acceptance). The questionnaire obtained 122 valid responses, of which 81.1% had never cancelled a brand. Through the parametric and non-parametric tests, it was possible to verify that the brand, in order to fill the crisis and avoid cancellation, should opt for a more emotional strategy, apologize and act - acceptance strategy, instead of remaining silent, or counter-arguing. The study shows that consumer attitude towards the brand and purchase intention will decrease right after the presentation of the crisis scenario and progressively increase after the implementation of the response strategies. However, these two variables never reached their initial values (before the crisis). Finally, there are limits, such as the type of sample chosen (by convenience), which did not cover the entire population, or the use of fictitious scenarios, where inconsistencies end up arising due to the subjectivity of the individual. Thus, for future management studies, it would be interesting to opt for a probabilistic sample or to test brands that have already undergone Cancel Culture. |
