As Caetrae e a conquista do Noroeste da Península Ibérica

Abstract

As caetrae, como hoje são chamadas, são moedas de bronze que foram cunhadas nos finais do século I a.C., cuja classificação sempre apresentou significativas complicações e longos debates. Seria apenas na segunda metade do século XX que se encontraria algum consenso sobre essas cunhagens. Apresentamos, nesse trabalho, uma proposta de leitura da iconografia dessas moedas que diverge, em grande medida, das análises anteriormente realizadas. Com base nos avanços historiográficos e arqueográficos, sobretudo nas últimas três décadas, acreditamos ser possível deslocar a interpretação dessa documentação, que sempre foi vista sob uma ótica imperialista, para uma perspetiva social e de integração dos povos do noroeste ibérico com o Império romano.

The caetrae, as they are called today, are bronze coins that were minted in the late 1st century BC, whose classification has always presented considerable complications and long debates. It would only be in the second half of the 20th century that some consensus on these mints would be found. We present, in this work, a proposal for the study of the iconography of these coins that diverges, to a great extent, from the analyses previously carried out. Based on historiographic and archaeographic advances, especially in the last three decades, we believe it is possible to relocate the interpretation of this documentation, which was always seen from an imperialist perspective, to a social and integrative approach of the populations of the Northwest Iberian Peninsula with the Roman Empire.
