Primeiras manifestações da literatura são-tomense. O lugar da poesia de Caetano da Costa Alegre

Abstract

As literaturas africanas de língua portuguesa têm vindo a despertar o interesse de investigadores e leitores, não apenas pelo apreço votado ao conjunto de obras literárias dos diferentes autores representativos de cada país pertencente aos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP), mas também pelo interesse em compreender e dar a conhecer o sistema literário dos países que integram este espaço. Esta dissertação toma como objeto a literatura são-tomense, uma literatura relativamente nova, devido à recente independência deste país africano, no qual o sistema literário se encontra ainda em construção e consolidação, tal como acontece nas demais nações africanas de língua portuguesa, porém cada uma com características particulares. Mais concretamente, nela se apresenta um estudo da poesia do poeta são-tomense Caetano da Costa Alegre (1864 – 1890), a fim de delinear o trajeto editorial da obra lírica do autor, elaborar uma tábua comparativa das lições de Versos de Caetano da Costa Alegre, nas diferentes edições, bem assim como analisar a importância deste autor para a história da literatura são-tomense, levando em consideração a inserção do poeta no seu contexto social e literário e as características intrínsecas da sua produção lírica. A análise pretendeu, ainda, identificar possíveis aproximações entre Caetano da Costa Alegre e Camões, quer no plano estritamente literário, quer no da apropriação das figuras de cada um dos autores feitas pelas gerações sucessivas de críticos e leitores.

Afro-Portuguese literature have aroused the interest of researchers and readers not only for their appreciation of the literary works of the representative authors of country belonging to the Portuguese speaking African Countries (PALOP) but also for their interest in understanding and showing the functioning of the literary system of these countries. This dissertation focus on the Sao Tomean literature, a relatively new literature due to the recent independence of this African nation. Similarly, to other Portuguese-speaking African countries, each with their own particular characteristics, the Sao Tomean literary system is still under construction and consolidation. This thesis aims to study the poetry of the Sao Tomean poet Caetano da Costa Alegre (1864-1890) in order to outline the editorial path of the author's lyrical work. Additionally, it elaborates a comparative table of the lessons of Verses by Caetano da Costa Alegre in the different editions and analyses their importance for the history of São Toméan literature, considering the insertion of the poet in his social and literary context as well as the intrinsic characteristics of his lyrical production. Furthermore, the analysis also sought to identify possible approximations between Caetano da Costa Alegre and Camões both on the literary level as well as on the appropriation of the authors' figures made by the successive generations of critics and readers.
