português, durante o Iº milénio a.C.
The main aim of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the material, technological and economic aspects of the coastal and estuarine populations that lived in north-west Portugal during the 1st millennium BC. To this purpose, an exhaustive analysis was carried out of thousands of ceramic fragments, among other materials, from ancient and recent archaeological excavations. The results made it possible to draw up a new chronological-cultural picture for the coast between the Minho and Onda rivers, and revealed a distribution of settlements that seems to reflect complex interactions, influenced by the exploitation of various resources and the management of the movement of people and goods along the estuaries and the coast. During the Late Bronze Age, occupations were recorded in 15 settlements and a burial context. Local ceramics predominated, but there was the introduction of new forms (pots with inner handles), "fine" ware and exogenous or foreign-influenced materials (burnished ornaments and axes with handles) which suggest irregular contacts with the south of the Peninsula with little structural impact, and which took place in the estuaries. This indicates an economy of gift, perpetrated by the Phoenicians on voyages of reconnaissance. In Early Iron Age, there were some changes in the geographical distribution of settlements, which were not very significant, with many settlements from the previous period remaining active. Local ceramics change the type of paste and selectively absorb some external influences, such as stamped decoration, the adoption of engobes and some figurative motifs. There is a greater presence of exogenous materials (Greek and Punic ceramics, glass necklace beads) and the introduction of new imagery (swastikas with straight arms, in rock art, and a betyl). The populations of the estuaries continued to play an important role in the interactions, which took place in different settlements and not in the logic of the port-of-trade. In Late Iron Age, there was a significant increase in settlements. In material terms, two major pottery areas were identified: one in the north and the other in the south, which seem to have an identity. Local and regional exchange is evident, as well as supraregional exchange, now more intense and with new agents - the Romans. This results in a greater presence of imported materials and the "democratisation" of the consumption of certain food products (wine, garum, olive oil, among others). The port-of-trade model is not confirmed in the context of interactions between indigenous people and "merchants", and it is in the estuaries that these contacts preferentially took place. |
