Resumo(s): | The present work stems from a partnership between the University of Minho and a
Portuguese company, Endutex Revestimentos Texteis S.A, in order to improve the research
capability of the company, helping in the optimisation and development of new and
competitive solutions. Due to its technical character, the main goals of this work were
defined based on short/medium time necessities of the company.
Endutex Revestimentos Texteis S.A. is a textile coating enterprise that produces solutions for
a variety range of applications including billboards and banners for digital printing. Typically
all the solutions were produced with PVC plastisols on a Polyester (PES) support. The high
levels of plasticizer in the plastisol formulations induce its migration to the surface of the
final product at short/medium times, which represents a major concern because the
presence of fat substances or contaminations in the surface can be an obstacle to the ink
adhesion during the digital printing process. To avoid this, the company applies a lacquer
coating through out the surface of the coated fabric as a final procedure of the production
process. However this represents an economical drawback and an ecological concern.
Following that, the first goal of this work was to optimise the PVC plastisol formulations in
order to eliminate the necessity of resorting lacquer, without compromising the quality of
the printability. On the other hand, the accelerated increase of the consumption of billboards and banners in
publicity, together with their short life-time (only some days in the case of the
announcement of an event, or a promotional price for example) creates a large volume of
waste, which represents a significant environmental challenge. Thus the development of
ecological and environmental friendly solutions is urgent in order to differentiate and
confirm the competitiveness of the company in this important market. Following that, the
second goal of this work is the development of ecological solutions, decreasing the
consumption of PVC and phthalate plasticizers in the plastisol, and replacing it by new green
and sustainable raw materials, preferentially biodegradable, that could be processed by the
same processing method of the conventional PVC plastisols (coating process).
Due to the differences between the two main goals, the present thesis is divided in two
parts: in Part A all the work done during the optimising the PVC plastisols in order to avoid
the lacquer application is presented; Part B is related with the development of alternative
and environmental friendly solutions.
During the optimisation of the PVC plastisols two alternatives of dispersion resin, with
different particle size distribution (emulsion and micro-suspension ones) were studied, with
micro-suspension resins showing better results not only in terms of particles packaging
efficiency and consequent decrease of plasticizer level for the same flow properties, but also
in stability along time (ageing period). An ecological solution, consisting on a starch based
plastisol, with biodegradable plasticizers, and using a support in cotton were produced with
success in a conventional coating machine, showing good and enabler results in several
characterization tests, including printability and high degradation rate in soil/compost. |
