The aim of this study is to know, understand and systematize 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teachers’ perspectives regarding the inclusion of students with severe special educational needs in regular classes. In order to do so, I have followed a qualitative methodology, interviewed four teachers who have experienced the inclusion of students with severe special educational needs in regular classes. Data collected was analyzed using the technique of content analysis, and on a first moment, the teachers’ perspectives are synthesized and presented factually, by participant, using their own words as much as possible. On a second moment, by crossing the data from their individual perspectives, I trace the differences and the similarities between the teachers as a group, interpret and discuss the data, according to the existing investigation and the international debate. Finally the results are synthesized in the following main conclusions: a) Teachers agree with their inclusion of students with severe special educational needs in regular classes, but not with full time inclusion; b) Teachers consider that, according to inclusion philosophy, “all children and young people, with serious incapacities, can and must be accepted in regular school and there must be found the appropriate answers to their specific needs” (Ainscow, 1997); c) Teachers have difficulty in communicating with students with severe special educational needs and in adjusting the curricula to theme; d) Teachers considered that school does not provide the material and human resources for a quality education of students with severe special educational needs in regular classes; e) Teachers consider that students with severe special educational needs may benefit in social terms, but do not benefit in academic terms from full time inclusion; f) Teachers feel that they do not know to how to put in practice the inclusion philosophy in the classroom, claim that they do not have sufficient support, neither from the leadership nor from specialized experts. This study is a contribution to clarify and deepen the knowledge about the inclusion of severe special needs children in regular classes in Portugal. |
