estabelecer relações, analisar relações e fazer extensão a novas situações. Desenvolveram a
estabelecer as relações pedidas.
A perspectiva
This research aims to understand how algebraic thinking of the 10th grade students develops, concerning the study of Functions, by solving problems using ICT. This is an interpretative study following a design case study with students from different school performances − medium (Sílvia), good (Rui) and weak (Rute) − that tries to answer to the following questions: (1) What features of algebraic thinking are developed in the 10th grade students in the study of Functions? What is the contribution of problem solving and the use of ICT in this development? (2) What perspectives have students on problem solving and the use of ICT in development of algebraic thinking? The case studies relate to the three distinct phases which occured Before, During and After the educational intervention. Data were collected through a questionnaire, a test (pre-test and post-test), written records of students, transcripts of recorded audio lectures, field notes and interview. This research literature review consists of five parts: (1) brief analysis of algebra historical evolution; (2) algebra in the school curriculum; (3) algebraic thinking (characterization of this thinking and the use of symbols in its development); (4) problem solving in teaching algebra and (5) ICT contribution in the development of algebraic thinking. These three students show progress in relation to algebraic thinking aspects such as – establishing relations, analysing relations and extending to new situations. They have developed the skill to manipulate expressions with letters, although in some situations they do not fully understand its meaning. Among the three students, Sílvia is the one who is developing more these aspects of algebraic thinking. Before the educational intervention she worked mostly with numbers and at the end she is able to establish relations through the manipulation of expressions with letters. Since Rui had already acquired that skill, he develops in understanding the meaning of the symbols he used, in the recognition of the benefit of the relations that establishes to apply to new situations and in the proof of overall results. Rute gained ability to the use of symbols and to infer general conclusions from particular cases. The three students are now able to establish, analyse and apply relations to new situations, although in different ways. Rui and Sílvia recognize the importance of the generalization of the relations they write. Rute shows to understand that importance, nevertheless she can’t all the time establish the requested relations. Problem solving and ICT have contributed to the development of each one to challenge them to interpret, think, abstract, conjecture/refute results and processes and apply what they learn to their everyday situations. The dynamic perspective of ICT facilitated the development of understanding the concept of variable allowing the simulation of variation contexts. |
