Alterações da superfície ocular relacionadas com fatores ambientais

Abstract

As condições ambientais, nomeadamente radiação infravermelha, ultravioleta e humidade relativa, tanto em ambiente exterior como em ambiente interior, têm uma importância significativa no conforto e bem-estar ocular. Alterações nessas condições, podem levar a desconforto ocular, que se reflete no aparecimento ou aumento de sinais e/ou sintomas oculares. Estes, por vezes, podem ser de tal forma intensos que interferem com a estabilidade dos indivíduos no desempenho das suas tarefas diárias, sejam pessoais, profissionais ou até de lazer. Neste trabalho, analisaram-se alguns sintomas e a variação da intensidade dos mesmos em três épocas que refletiam condições ambientais diferentes. Analisaram-se, também, os cuidados e conhecimentos sobre a proteção ocular nas diferentes situações Neste caso, a amostra correspondia à população que acedeu a um inquérito disponibilizado “online”. Por outro lado, mediram-se parâmetros da superfície ocular em três grupos profissionais, que se considerou estarem expostos às condições ambientais acima referidas, de forma mais intensa. Os resultados indicam que, tanto em ambiente exterior como interior, existirão fatores que despoletam e fazem variar a intensidade de sinais e sintomas oculares e nalguns casos podem provocar alterações cumulativas. Verificou-se, ainda, que os conhecimentos e cuidados de proteção ocular referidos pela população analisada, não são os ideais, principalmente quando se compara com outros cuidados, nomeadamente os que dizem respeito à influência da radiação ultravioleta na pele. Conclui-se assim, que é importante atuar na prevenção, sobretudo sensibilizar as pessoas para a importância da proteção ocular adequada, tanto em ambiente de exterior como de interior, principalmente quando se está exposto de forma intensa a condições ambientais adversas. Seria interessante isolar e avaliar a influência das condições ambientais de exterior, aqui analisadas, sobre a superfície ocular, para perceber se alguma delas, qual e a que nível provoca as variações de valores encontradas nos resultados do grupo 2 (nadadoressalvadores). Por outro lado, era também interessante perceber quais as condições em ambiente interior, que despoletam a sintomatologia ligeira manifestada pelos indivíduos que responderam ao inquérito.

Environmental conditions, including infrared, ultraviolet radiation and relative humidity, both in outdoor and indoor environments, are of significant importance in the comfort and ocular well-being. Changes in these conditions can lead to eye discomfort that is reflected in the appearance or increase signs and/or ocular symptoms. These can sometimes be such that interfere with the stability of individuals in carrying out their daily tasks, both personal and professional or even leisure. In this work, we analyzed several symptoms and the changes in their intensity in three periods that reflect different environmental conditions. We analyzed also the care and knowledge about eye protection in different situations. The studied sample matched the population who agreed to participate in an online survey. On the other hand, it were measured the parameters of the ocular surface in three occupational groups, which were considered to be exposed, in a more intense way, to environmental conditions mentioned above. The results indicate that in both outdoor and indoor environment, there are factors that trigger and do vary the intensity of ocular signs and symptoms, and in some cases can cause cumulative changes. It was also found that the knowledge and care of eye protection, referred to by this sample, are not optimal, especially when compared to other care in particular concerning the influence of ultraviolet radiation on the skin. It is concluded that it is important to work on prevention, especially to raise awareness of the importance of proper eye protection, both in the exterior and interior environments, especially when they are exposed intensely to adverse environmental conditions. It would be interesting to isolate and evaluate the influence of outdoor environmental conditions analyzed here, on the ocular surface, to see if any of them, where and at what level, causes changes in values found in the results. On the other hand it will be also interesting to find out which conditions in an indoor environment may trigger mild symptoms manifested by individuals who responded to the survey.
