Atitudes face à estatística em estudantes de Ciências da Saúde

Abstract

O presente estudo pretende, por um lado, apresentar a análise factorial confirmatória da versão portuguesa do SATS28 e, por outro lado, verificar se a área de estudo, o facto de recorrer habitualmente ao instrumental estatístico ou já ter reprovado a estatística influenciam a atitude face à mesma. O SATS 28 foi aplicado a 685 estudantes da área de ciências da saúde de diferentes instituições de ensino superior do Norte de Portugal. A versão portuguesa do SATS28 apresentou um bom ajustamento ao modelo teórico (CFI = 0.962, TLI = 0.958, RMSEA = 0.048), numa primeira análise. Uma segunda análise, em que eliminamos 3 itens e introduzimos correlações entre erros não previstas no modelo inicial aponta para um possível aprimoramento da escala. Relativamente à avaliação e comparação das atitudes face à Estatística de acordo com os factores em estudo, os nossos resultados mostram que os factores utilizador habitual de Estatística e reprovações a Estatística tem um efeito significativo quer na atitude global quer em todas as componentes das atitudes. O factor área de estudo apresentou um efeito significativo apenas nas componentes valor e dificuldade. Em conclusão, apesar de o modelo original apresentar bons índices de ajustamento, o modelo corrigido (com a eliminação de 3 itens e correlações entre erros) deverá ser testado numa nova amostra. Finalmente, avaliamos as atitudes face à estatística, onde constatamos que os estudantes de Enfermagem se destacam em relação ao valor que atribuem a esta disciplina, por sua vez os estudantes de Medicina são os que acreditam ter menos dificuldade na aprendizagem e uso dos métodos estatísticos.

This study intend, firstly, to present a confirmatory factor analysis of the Portuguese version of SATS28 and, secondly, to make sure that the study area, considering that it usually resorts to instrumental statistical or has already failed the Statistics, influence the attitude towards Statistics. The SATS 28 was applied to 685 students in the health sciences area from different higher education institutions in the North of Portugal. In the first analysis, the Portuguese version of SATS28 showed a good fit to the theoretical model (CFI = 0.962, TLI = 0958, RMSEA = 0.048). A second analysis, in which we eliminated 3 items and introduced correlations among unanticipated errors in the initial model, can enhance the scale. For the evaluation and comparison of attitudes according to statistical factors in the study, our results showed that the factors “usual user of Statistics” and “Statistical disapprovals” have a significant effect on both global attitude and all components of attitudes. The study area factor only had a significant effect on difficulty and value components. In conclusion, although the original model provided good indicators of adjustment, the corrected model (with the elimination of 3 items and correlations between errors) should be tested on a new sample. We finally assessed the attitudes towards Statistics, which showed us that nursing students stand in relation to the value they attach to this subject, while medical students are those who believe they have less difficulty in learning and using statistical methods.
