This dissertation approaches the role of social networks on firm growth. A social network can be defined as a set of knots or actors (people or organizations) connected by social relationships or ties of a specific kind where not only social exchange can occur but also information or business exchange. Firm growth is an heterogeneous and multidimensional phenomenon thus difficult to define and to measure. By studying firm growth via social networks it is assumed that organizations are immerse in networks of social relationships that influence its economic action and that, through its networks of personal relations, businessmen and their companies gain access to fundamental resources. In this study quantitative data was collected through an inquiry submitted to 210 employees (where 150 answers were considered valid) of an IT company with significantly positive growth indicators in the last few years. This dissertation analyses the role of social networks on firm growth, more specifically in achieving competitive advantage, obtaining access to information and the indispensable resources so that growth may occur, in the identification of new business opportunities and in the internationalization process. The inquiry analysis determines the following conclusion: the respondents are aware that social networks are a source of competitive advantage and that they play an important and facilitator role in the access to new business opportunities, they viable the business’s internationalization and allow companies to reach growth. Empirically, the investigation alerts to the growing need of companies to think social networking in a more structured way and as a potential source of competitive advantage evidencing the role that these networks have in the competitive capacity and in the business’s potential growth. |
