A memória e o património marítimo da costa norte de Portugal

Abstract

Intitulada “A Memória e o Património Marítimo da Costa Norte de Portugal” , esta dissertação tem como cerne de estudo o património marítimo português bem como o património marítimo bacalhoeiro de Viana do Castelo. Num país de tradições e heranças marítimas, importa analisar o património e as memórias que ainda restam de momentos marítimos passados, como é o caso da indústria da pesca do bacalhau em Viana do Castelo. Objectivando contextualizar esta dissertação, foi traçada uma panorâmica sobre as principais políticas marítimas nacionais, e os esforços que os sucessivos governos portugueses têm feito face a esta temática; foi definida a conceptualização da memória e do património, num contexto marítimo; descritos museus que se dedicam a salvaguardar o património marítimo internacional, nacional e bacalhoeiro; e enquadrado o património marítimo bacalhoeiro no seu contexto histórico e na área de estudo, tendo o cuidado de demonstrar exemplos patrimoniais na cidade de Viana do Castelo, sobre o património marítimo bacalhoeiro. Ao reflectir sobre o tema esta investigação concluiu que é vital e de significativa importância a existência de museus marítimos ou com temática marítima em Portugal; que existem museus marítimos dedicados à divulgação do património bacalhoeiro português, e que as memórias e património marítimo bacalhoeiro de Viana do Castelo, devem ser inventariados exaustivamente por forma a serem preservados e dados a conhecer às gerações futuras, como um legado cultural, possivelmente na forma de um futuro Museu Marítimo de Viana do Castelo.

This dissertation, entitled "Maritime Memory and Heritage of the North Coast of Portugal", focuses on the Portuguese maritime heritage and the cod fishing maritime heritage in Viana do Castelo. In a country with a strong maritime heritage and tradition, it is important to analyze heritage and memories that still remain from past maritime moments, as it is the case of the cod fishing industry in Viana do Castelo. Aiming at contextualizing this dissertation an overview of the main national maritime policies was conducted, as well as an analysis of the efforts that the various Portuguese governments have taken. A conceptualization of memory and heritage in a maritime context was also done and a description of museums dedicated to the preservation the national, international and codfish maritime heritage was conducted. Codfish maritime heritage was contextualized and framed in a historical context and in the study area. Heritage examples from the codfish maritime heritage in the city of Viana do Castelo were presented. Reflecting on this subject, this research concludes that it is vital and of significant importance the existence of maritime museums or of maritime themes in Portugal; there are maritime museums devoted to the dissemination of the Portuguese cod fishing heritage, and that the memories and heritage about cod fishing and maritime heritage of Viana do Castelo must be comprehensively collected and assembled in order to preserve them and pass them to future generations, as a cultural legacy, perhaps in the form of Maritime Museum Viana do Castelo.
