Influência da insuficiência de convergência na velocidade de leitura

Abstract

A leitura e a sua compreensão podem ser influenciadas por vários fatores, um deles é o equilíbrio binocular, que pode alterar a velocidade de leitura e até mesmo fazer saltar linhas, tornando a leitura bastante desconfortável, e influenciando assim, entre outros, a compreensão da leitura e a ausência de hábitos de leitura. A Insuficiência de Convergência (IC) é um problema frequente que afeta muitos jovens, entre 4,2% a 6% de prevalência nas escolas, assim sendo são necessários mais estudos para se perceber as consequências deste desequilíbrio binocular.1 O objetivo deste trabalho é perceber até que ponto a IC afeta a velocidade de leitura e os erros durante a mesma. Foram avaliados 32 estudantes universitários com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 26 anos, 10 deles com IC e 22 como população de controlo. Foi avaliada a leitura destes em dois textos, o primeiro texto foi usado num exame nacional de língua Portuguesa do 12º ano e o segundo texto foi escrito usando as palavras do primeiro texto mas colocadas de forma randomizada. Os resultados obtidos mostram-nos que a IC não tem influência, estatisticamente significativa, na velocidade de leitura e nos erros de leitura. Verificou-se que existem diferenças, estatisticamente significativas, na velocidade de leitura e nos erros entre o texto ordenado e o texto randomizado.

Reading task and its comprehension may be influenced by many factors, one of them is the binocular balance which can change the reading speed or even jump the lines when reading. Therefore, reading becomes very uncomfortable, inducing this way to a lack of reading habits. The convergence insufficiency (CI) is a frequent problem that affects lots of youth people, something between 4,2% and 6% of prevalence in the schools, therefore, further studies are necessary to understand the consequences of this binocular unbalance. The purpose of this study is to understand to how far the CI can affect the reading speed and its errors during the process. In this study, 32 university students were assessed, aged between 18 and 26 years old, where 10 of them presented CI and 22 were part of a control-group. It was assessed their reading ability in two texts. The first text was used in a national test of Portuguese Language of the 12th year of school, while the second one was randomly written using the same words of the first text. The results obtained show us that CI doesn’t affect in a statistical way the reading speed neither the reading errors. It was verified that exists statistical significant differences in the reading speed and reading errors when reading a coherent text and a non-coherent text.
