aprendizagem. São elas: a motilidade ocular, a coordenação olho-mão, a perceção, a
concentração e a memória visual. Todas elas influenciam a leitura e neste sentido
One of the most basic tools essential to the human development is reading which inevitably affects the success of the learning experience. The modern society is becoming much more demanding, which in itself increases the visual requirements. In school activities, 90% of all the collected data is visual and when it comes to reading tasks that number increases to 100%. With children the learning problems reach values of 11%, being 80% of them caused by problems of visual processing (Álvarez et al., 2004). The visual processing doesn’t only imply a normal visual acuity, it also requires others skills that during the development of the visual system affect the learning experience. They are: ocular motility, eye-hand coordination, perception, concentration and visual memory. All of them influence the lecture and in this sense any dysfunction or anomaly in this skills is going to have repercussions in the reading. This way it is intended to verify the connection between the focusing level and reading velocity in primary schools, namely in children of the 2rd, 3rd and 4th grade. Ninety seven children, with ages between 7 and 10 years old (8,6±1,0) was enrolled in the study. To evaluate the reading velocity it was used The Wilkins Test and to evaluate the concentration it was used the Toulouse-Piéron Test. At the same time some optometric parameters were also evaluated with the purpose of relating them with the variables concentration and reading velocity. It is important to point that, of the main results, that concentration and reading velocity are connected and how much greater the focusing level is the greater the reading velocity. The reading speed increases tendentiously with the age increase and around 9 years old it occurs a significant statistical change in the number of correct words read for minute. The read speed is influenced by the visual acuity of distant vision and near vision of the subject. |
