At the present time women play a fundamental role in society and in companies, with a significant contribution for their development. Therefore, as argued by Giddens (1991, p. 63), nothing is clearer than the fact that gender issues are subject of continuous research and analysis, more than a simple extension of the biological established sexual difference. Considering the fact that in Portugal women are the majority in the profession of chartered accountants, the aim is to know and understand the reality of the practice of the accounting as a profession. Thus the main objective of this study is to understand the problematic associated with enter to the profession and with the development of accounting tasks, through the perspective of women that are chartered accountants. In order to accomplish this objective semi structured interviews were performed using open questions in order to obtain deeper and insightful knowledge concerning accounting and chartered accounting tasks. It is possible to conclude that, from the conducted study, in what concerns the entrance to the profession, the obstacles that existed in the past were surpassed or minimized. However, in the exercise of the profession there still are inequalities, discriminations and sexism that make difficult the upward mobility of women in the accounting profession. It is also highlighted that the profession of chartered accountant demands considerable organization, rigor, commitment, and responsibility. In addition, these are the characteristics that better suit the natural and intrinsic characteristics of women, therefore explaining their usual better performance in the accounting profession. Finally, the study also highlights that one of the most important challenges that the profession faces is the recognition of its importance both for organizations and society in general. |
