Tratamento de odores da ETAR da refinaria de Matosinhos

Abstract

Os efeitos negativos provocados pela libertação de odores em estações de tratamento de águas residuais (ETAR) têm provocado alguns incómodos às populações que residem na área envolvente. Com a realização deste trabalho pretendeu-se contribuir para a diminuição deste problema, aplicando tratamentos capazes de melhorar a qualidade do ar. O principal objetivo do presente trabalho consistiu no projeto de um tratamento adequado para diminuir as emissões de odores provenientes de pontos específicos, nomeadamente das bacias de tempestade e da bacia de homogeneização, da ETAR da refinaria de Matosinhos. Estes dois focos de odor foram apontados como os principais pelos operadores da ETAR. Foram estudadas duas formas de tratamento, sendo que uma delas é constituída por duas etapas. Para as bacias de tempestade, a aplicação de um sistema de sprinklers com adição de agentes químicos neutralizadores de odores, e para a bacia de homogeneização, o dimensionamento de uma cobertura adequada, que terá como função evitar que as emissões sejam enviadas diretamente para o ar. Essas mesmas emissões serão enviadas para um biofiltro. O projeto deste biorreator foi a última etapa deste trabalho. O trabalho consistiu fundamentalmente na pesquisa de agentes neutralizantes adequados, dimensionamento de estruturas e dimensionamento do biofiltro, incluindo possíveis matérias para utilizar no leito filtrante e equipamentos auxiliares que o sistema irá eventualmente necessitar. Tendo todos estes fatores em consideração, foi feita uma análise económica ao projeto, exceto à aplicação de agentes neutralizadores de odores devido à falta de dados concretos para a realizar. O custo capital do sistema de biofiltração juntamente com a cobertura da bacia de homogeneização é de 585 k€. Todo o trabalho se regeu por princípios teóricos e dados fornecidos pela empresa. Num futuro, se se verificar a aplicação deste projeto, terão de ser realizados todos os testes para confirmar as hipóteses aqui mencionadas. Nomeadamente, é necessário testar os materiais de construção das estruturas referidas e aferir as eficiências de remoção de odores, tanto do biofiltro como dos agentes neutralizadores, a uma escala piloto.

The negative effects caused by the release of odors from waste water treatment plants (WWTP) are causing some inconvenience to the people that live on the affected area. With this work, the main purpose is the contribution to the resolution of this problem and to improve the air quality. The main objective of the present work is the design of an adequate treatment to reduce the odors that come from specific points, specifically the storm basins and the homogenization basin, of the WWTP located in the Matosinhos refinery. These two basins were considered by the operators the main responsible for the odor problem. Two treatments were studied, and one of them is divided in two stages. For the storm basins, the application of a sprinkler system with odor neutralizing agents, and for the homogenization basin, the construction of a full cover that will stop the emissions from going directly to the air. These emissions will be sent to the last part of this project, a biofilter. This work consisted in the research of adequate neutralizing agents, structure dimensioning and dimensioning of the biofilter, including the material to use in the biofilter bed and auxiliary equipment that the system will need. With this information, an economic analysis was done to the project, except for the neutralizing agents because of the limited available data. The capital cost of the biofiltration system and the cover for the homogenization basin is 585 k €. All this work was done following only theoretical principals and data that the company gave. In the future, if the installation of this project comes true, tests should be done to confirm the data that were explained in this report. More specifically, it is absolutely necessary to test the materials used for the structures and the odor removal efficiencies of the neutralizing agents and the biofilter, on a pilot scale.
