Conceção, análise e construção de malhas estruturais em madeira

Abstract

As malhas estruturais de madeira são um tipo especial de estruturas que surgiu no século XX, essencialmente relacionadas com exposições ligadas à arquitetura e engenharia. Hoje, continuam associadas a construções de cariz efémero e raramente são encontradas em edifícios correntes. Apesar da sua raridade, podem-lhe ser atribuídas inúmeras vantagens comparativamente a outras estruturas similares, como são exemplos a sua leveza e a utilização de baixas quantidades de material. Este conjunto de características despertou o interesse no estudo das malhas estruturais em madeira, na sua forma de conceção, no seu comportamento estrutural e nos seus processos de construção. De modo a aprofundar o conhecimento neste tema, nesta dissertação é proposta uma abordagem que vise todos os pontos referidos anteriormente, ou seja, o estudo das malhas estruturais em madeira, da conceção à construção. O ponto de partida foi a escolha do desenho duma malha simples, que possibilitasse a sua adaptação, e fosse constituída de elementos lineares e fáceis de fabricar. Partindo deste desenho inicial desenvolveram-se diversos modelos, físicos e computacionais, auxiliados de resultados experimentais, a partir dos quais foi realizada a análise estrutural da malha. Como forma de estudo dos processos construtivos e de validação da análise estrutural realizada, foi construído um protótipo à escala real da malha desenvolvida. Os resultados obtidos mostram que este tipo de estrutura pode ser muito interessante a nível funcional, apresentando inúmeras características que se mostram vantajosas. Contudo, são estruturas que ainda se encontram num estado inicial quanto ao seu estudo, o que implica a sua rara utilização em construções correntes.

Timber gridshells are a special kind of structures that appeared in twentieth century, essentially related with architecture and engineering exhibitions. Today, they are still associated with ephemeral buildings and are rarely found in ordinary buildings. Despite their rarity, they have many advantages compared to other similar structures, such as its lightness and the use of low amounts of material. This set of characteristics aroused interest in the study of timber gridshells, in its design, in its structural behavior and in its construction processes. In order to deepen the knowledge on this subject, in this Thesis is proposed an approach that addresses all the previously mentioned points, that is, the study of the timber gridshells, from the design to the construction. The starting point was the choice of a simple mesh draw, that would allow its adaptation, and be constituted of linear and easy to manufacture elements. Starting from this initial drawing, several physical and computational models were developed, aided by experimental results, from which the structural analysis of the gridshell was performed. As a way of studying the constructive processes and validation of the structural analysis performed, a real-scale prototype of the developed gridshell was built. The results show that this kind of structure can be very interesting at functional level, presenting many characteristics that prove advantageous. However, the study of this structures is still in an initial state, which implies their rare use in common constructions.
