Given the high energy dependence of existing buildings, the European Union, in 2010, have strengthened and updated the regulations which regulate the minimum energy requirements for European buildings and also it appears for the first time, the concept of Zero Energy Buildings: highly efficient buildings. Given this, the EU member states have been increasing their energy requirements for buildings, in order to rise its efficiency, reduce their emissions and energy needs, making them extremely sustainable. Despite the concept of Zero Energy Buildings have been designed for new buildings, their application in existing buildings can become an essential step to achieve the EU proposed targets. Thus, an energy rehabilitation of existing buildings, combined with sustainable practices can become the best way to reduce energy requirements and carbon emissions from the EU. In this dissertation, it is analysed the possibility to achieve a nearly Zero Energy Building through an energy rehabilitation of a Portuguese residence, built in the late 60. Due to the lack of energy regulations for buildings at the time, most of them have large energy needs and huge carbon emissions. With the purpose to find the best rehabilitation measures, BIM methodology was used, which presence is increasing in the construction industry, to make energy performance analysis of specific models from the proposals presented. This way, it becomes quickly possible to compare the advantages and disadvantages of each solution at an early stage of the project, which could help the work of architects and engineers in order to achieve a Zero Energy Building. |
