The Rivers Tinto and Odiel converge on the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, forming an estuarine system called Ria de Huelva, which is considered one of the most polluted ones in the world as a result of the contributions of contamination by acid mine drainage from both rivers, and other industries in this system. In this study we apply cluster analysis to the hydrogeochemical parameters’ results analyzed in particulate matter samples taken at different points of the estuary, and it is also compared with a previous study by these authors, referred exclusively to the dissolved matter. Thus, we find that the different areas of behavior defined depending on the time of the year, arise as a result of the main flow’s seasonality, especially from the River Tinto: In times of low amounts of rainfall, as it is in summer, this river has very low flow, whereby the tidal influence moves upstream causing the rise of the mixing zone towards the interior. However, the rainy season results in a displacement downstream of the mixing zone with marked fluvial character. In the case of particulate matter, a hydrodynamic factor has to be considered due to tidal currents which affect the turbidity plume. |
