O Não-Lugar do Género

Abstract

Esta dissertação articula um conjunto de ideias que, na sua totalidade, propõem uma reflexão sobre o género e a arquitetura. “Não-Lugar de Género” será o termo utilizado para lhe fazer referência. Ao longo da dissertação articulam-se duas abordagens distintas: uma que dá protagonismo ao indivíduo enquanto ser ativo na determinação da sua identidade e outra que considera as conjunturas sociais que influem e, deste modo, condicionam a sua identidade. Articulação entre ambas permite construir um argumento acerca da performatividade de género – segundo as premissas da filósofa Judith Bulter – em que género deriva de uma construção social, decorrente das práticas culturais, contextualizadas num discurso histórico específico. O objetivo, para além de expandir o campo contextual daquilo que tradicionalmente se entende por “género”, é a anulação da categoria do “outro”. Considera-se a reciprocidade da relação entre o indivíduo e o espaço: a arquitetura muda conforme o indivíduo e a sua esfera social, e os indivíduos veem o seu comportamento moldado pela arquitetura. A hipótese aqui defendida é que a sociedade contemporânea é produtora de infinitas identidades derivadas de performatividades e, neste sentido, “O Não-Lugar do Género” permanece como um modelo ativo que oferece um modo mais compreensivo de entender os novos modos contemporâneos de identificação com o lugar.

This dissertation articulates a set of ideas that, in their totality, propose a reflection about gender and architecture. “The Non-Place of Gender” will be the term used to describe it. Throughout the dissertation there are two different approaches: one that gives protagonism to the individual as an active being in the construction of its identity and another that considers the social conjunctures that influence and condition its identity. Reviewing both allows for the argument relating to performativity of gender – according to the premises of the philosopher Judith Butler – in which gender derives from a social construction, due to cultural practices, contextualized in a specific historical discourse. The intention being, besides expanding the contextual field of what is traditionally understood by gender, the annulment of the category of the “other”. Consider the reciprocity between the individual and space: architecture changes according to the individual and its social sphere, and individuals see their behavior shaped by architecture. The hypothesis here defended is that contemporary society is the maker of infinite identities derived from performativity and, this way, “The Non-Place of Gender” remains an active and comprehensive model in understanding the new ways of identifying with a place.
