Contributos para o estudo contrastivo de provérbios e idiomatismos em português e chinês: as obras metalinguísticas de Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves

Abstract

Os provérbios e idiomatismos transportam a essência de cada língua, são tesouros culturais. O seu estudo e investigação constituem uma via efetiva para o conhecimento de cada cultura. Portugal e a China, um país ocidental e um oriental, possuem grandes diferenças, quer no tocante à língua quer à cultura. Assim, o estudo contrastivo dos provérbios e idiomatismos portuguesas e chineses é importante e necessário. O Padre Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves, pioneiro português dos estudos sinológicos do século XIX, escreveu várias obras de chinês quando trabalhava como professor em Macau. Nas suas várias obras, e em particular na Arte China, no Diccionario Portuguez-China e no manuscrito recentemente editado por Anabela Barros e Ana Ng Cen (2014; 2017), registam-se muitos provérbios e idiomatismos chineses, geralmente acompanhados de equivalentes, traduções ou explicações em português. No presente trabalho estudam-se alguns dos provérbios e idiomatismos das suas obras, analisam-se os equivalentes ou explicações em português e comentam-se as suas fontes históricas e contextos culturais, procurando identificar e explicar as diferenças entre eles.

Proverbs and idioms are cultural treasures, carrying the essence of each language and its related study is an efficient way to understand each culture. Portugal and China, for one is a Western country while the other situates in the East, are very different in language and culture. Thus, it´s very important and necessary to make a contrastive study of the proverbs and idioms of these two countries and it will help us to understand their culture. The Vincentian missionary Joaquim Afonso Goncalves, who wrote many books of Chinese language while worked as a teacher in Macao, was a distinguished Portuguese sinologist in the 19th century. Most of his books, especially Arte China, Diccionário portuguêz-china and the manuscript recently edited by Anabela Barros and Ana Ng Cen (2014, 2017), record many Chinese proverbs and idioms, most of which are accompanied by equivalents, translations or explanations in Portuguese. This dissertation studies some proverbs and idioms which are picked from Gonçalve's books, analyzes their Portuguese equivalents, translations and explanations, and furthermore analyzes the cultural differences between these two countries by studying the historical sources and cultural contexts of the proverbs and idioms.
