A “crise dos refugiados”: média e representações sociais

Abstract

O conceito de “refugiado” tem sido bastante popularizado e mediatizado nos últimos anos, embora não novo na história. A fuga de refugiados para países vizinhos em busca de segurança e paz é antiga, tanto quanto os conflitos, a instabilidade e a guerra que potenciam essa fuga. Muitas vezes designados “deslocados”, “expatriados” ou até de “migrantes ilegais” todos ansiavam por um país estável e seguro. O conflito sírio, que teve início em 2011, teve proporções gigantescas e provocou uma onda de refugiados nunca antes vista, que se refletiu, particularmente, na União Europeia, mas também em todo o mundo. Este conflito ainda se mantém nos dias de hoje, embora tenha tido um maior impacto mediático entre 2014 e 2016. A União Europeia assiste a uma das maiores “crises de refugiados” da história, que criou oposição entre os líderes políticos e abalou os valores base da União Europeia. O acolhimento de refugiados, os milhares de mortos no Mar Mediterrâneo, o encerramento de fronteiras, os ataques terroristas, a xenofobia e a violência, tornaram-se notícias constantes ao longo destes anos. Dado o impacto e a centralidade deste fenómeno social, importa perceber de que forma as informações sobre os refugiados que chegam, diariamente, através dos média, retratam os acontecimentos ligados à “crise dos refugiados” e contribuem para a formação de representações sociais sobre este fenómeno. Com esse objetivo, procedeu-se à análise de uma amostra de notícias e artigos de opinião em três jornais portugueses (Público, Correio da Manhã e Observador), procurando conhecer acerca da objetividade e imparcialidade das notícias e da forma como os argumentos são apresentados nos artigos de opinião.

The concept of "refugee" has been quite popularized and mediated in recent years, although it is not an old concept of our own in history. The flight of refugees to neighbouring countries in search of security and peace is as old as the conflicts, instability and war that fuel this escape. Often disguised as "displaced", "expatriates" or even "illegal migrants" all longed for a stable and secure country. The Syrian conflict that began in 2011 was of gigantic proportions and triggered a wave of refugees never seen before, which was reflected particularly in the European Union, but also in the whole of the world. This conflict is still present today, although it has had a greater media impact between 2014 and 2016. The European Union is witnessing one of the largest "refugee crises" in history, which has created opposition among political leaders and has shaken the basic values of the European Union. The rampant reception of refugees, the thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean, the closure of borders, the terrorist attacks in Paris, Berlin or Nice, xenophobia and violence have become constant news over the years. Given the impact and centrality of this social phenomenon, it is important to understand how information on refugees arriving daily through the media portrays events related to the "refugee crisis" and contributes to the formation of social representations on this phenomenon. For this purpose, a sample of news and opinion articles was analysed in three Portuguese newspapers (Público, Correio da Manhã and Observador), seeking to know about the objectivity and impartiality of the news and the way in which the arguments are presented in the articles of opinion.
