In a context in which the globalization assumes a decisive role in the economic and business relations, companies must be able to guarantee their sustainability finding a new strategical positioning. This dissertation intends to contribute to the study of the international activity of the small and medium enterprises of the North of Portugal, exploring the main barriers encountered by them during the process of internationalization, once these SMEs assume a very important role, not only in the Portuguese but also in the European Economies. For the study of the main barriers to internationalization, primary data was collected, presenting the same survey to 13 small and medium enterprises located in the North of Portugal. First, the beginning of international operations of those companies was analyzed and, thereafter, another review to their current operations, in order to understand what main objections were encountered at the initial phase of the international activity, which ones are remaining as obstacles and/or if there are some new difficulties preventing the internationalization to happen. The results of the investigation showed that the major internal difficulty was the unqualified or not abled human resources, while the greatest external difficulty was the distinct governances of the different markets. It was also found that despite the prior planning of entry into international markets and high entrepreneurship, barriers to internationalization could prevent companies from achieving their international goals. However, these small and medium enterprises are present in all five continents with expectations to keep and develop their activities in international markets. |
