Conhecimento de sinais não-verbais, inteligência emocional e empatia: um estudo exploratório

Abstract

A investigação sobre Sinais Não-Verbais (SNV) versa os mais diversos contextos. Contudo, os estudos focados no conhecimento dos SNV pelos indivíduos revelam-se escassos. Assim, o presente trabalho pretendeu aferir o Test of Nonverbal Cue Knowledge para a população portuguesa, avaliar o conhecimento de SNV de estudantes de Psicologia, de Criminologia e Justiça Criminal, e de Direito, a relação entre este conhecimento e os constructos de Empatia e de Inteligência Emocional e as diferenças entre os sexos no conhecimento destes sinais. Os dados foram recolhidos com recurso a diferentes medidas de autorrelato. A amostra foi constituída por 262 estudantes da Universidade do Minho, na qual 224 são do sexo feminino. Os resultados revelaram que os estudantes de Psicologia possuem um maior conhecimento de SNV, que existe uma relação entre este conhecimento e os construtos, e que não existem diferenças significativas entre os sexos no conhecimento de SNV. Face ao exposto, salienta-se a importância da abordagem desta temática nos planos curriculares dos citados cursos, por forma a aumentar o conhecimento dos estudantes em relação aos SNV. Tal é de particular importância visto que, nos contextos judiciais, inúmeras vezes os indivíduos tendem a manipular os profissionais envolvidos para a obter diversas vantagens.

Investigations about Nonverbal Cues (NVC) occur in the most diverse contexts. However, the research regarding the assessment of individuals’ knowledge about Nonverbal Cues is limited. Thus, the present study aims to adapt the Test of Nonverbal Cue Knowledge to the Portuguese population, evaluate the knowledge of Nonverbal Cues of students of Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Law, the relationship between this knowledge and the constructs of Empathy and Emotional Intelligence, as the differences between sexes in these cues’ knowledge . The data were collected using a test and self-report measures. The present study’s sample consists of 262 participants from University of Minho, of whom 224 are female. The results revealed that Psychology students have greater knowledge about Nonverbal Cues, that there is a relation between this knowledge with the aforementioned constructs, and there are no significant differences between sexes respecting the knowledge of Nonverbal Cues. Regarding the above, one should address this topic in the curricular plans of Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Law, as way to increase students’ knowledge of NVC. This is of particular importance given that in judicial practices individuals often try to manipulate the professionals involved in order to obtain advantages.
