Sustainability and energy efficiency have, in recent years, gained increasing importance in Europe and worldwide. Driven by the economic crisis, by the need to, on the one hand, reduce costs, and on the other, to increase energy autonomy, as well as by the growing awareness of climate change, led to the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings becoming a strategy considered central in the future of the European Union (EU). In Europe, approximately 25 to 40% of the final energy is consumed in buildings (lighting, heating and cooling), which is why it is essential to adopt energy efficiency measures and strategies to reduce energy consumption, and thus reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. With the transposition of European directives into Portuguese legislation, the demands for improving the energy efficiency of Portuguese buildings are increasing, in terms of isolation from the external environment, including glazing. The energy improvement measures for glazed openings and their contribution to improving the energy efficiency of Portuguese buildings were reinforced with the introduction of new reference requirements in the new regulations (Regulation of Energy Performance of Residential Buildings - REH and Regulation of Energy Performance of Commercial and Service Buildings - RECS) and the creation of the Energy Labeling System for Products - SEEP JANELAS. As glazing is an important element of a window and constant in buildings, with important energy exchanges, it will be relevant to know the various properties of these and how they influence the performance of the buildings in which they are located, always relating economic issues in their cost/benefit analysis. As the glazing market has more and more options, with the various manufacturers offering glazing with different functions and characteristics, the objective of this dissertation is to compare and relate the different glazing parameters, thus trying to determine the most optimized solutions, with good relations of energy performance and return on initial investment. From the analysis and simulations carried out, it was possible to conclude that there is no linear relationship between the cost of glazing and its thermal energy performance when integrated into a building stands out. Which is why, the identification of the best relationship between the Solar Factor (g), the thermal transmission coefficient (Ug) and the cost will always have to be assessed in each specific case. |
