The object of this research project is the influence of Socratic thought on the fundamentals of adult education. It aims to identify the relationship between the Socratic educational model and the theoretical and practical principles that guide adult education. It intends to contribute to a philosophical foundation of adult education, by showing that the foundations of this branch of the science of education are rooted in the principles of Socratic philosophy. The choice of this theme for the present work lies in the increasing relevance that society, educational institutions, and educators themselves attribute to the need and importance of lifelong education and the awareness that the adult learner needs educational principles that are different from those that guide the educational process of a child or adolescent. It is proposed, initially, to approach the thought of educators and philosophers of classical antiquity with the objective of evidencing that the conception of adult and lifelong education is not a contemporary conception, but has its origin in Greek antiquity, having been discontinued for some centuries and resumed in the 20th century. To this end, and under the pretext of making a certain connection, we seek to investigate the Socratic educational theories and practices and their development in Plato's educational theories, in order to verify how these educational assumptions remained and were developed and made evident over the centuries. In order to ascertain and be able to evaluate the influence of these educational assumptions on the current conception of adult and lifelong education, we seek to investigate the events, the actors, and the assumptions involved in the current conception of education, as understood as adult and lifelong education. In this sense, the work is situated in an interface zone between the emergence of adult education in Ancient Greece, with reference to Socratic philosophy, and its influence on contemporary educational theories and practices that work adult education in a lifelong education perspective. |
