Burnout is a psychosocial syndrome that results from an individual's inability to manage chronic stress related to their occupational context. Burnout interferes not only with the physical and mental health of teachers, but also with the teaching-learning processes, relationships between colleagues and school principals, and relationships with the school community, among others. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to explore, over three chapters, the phenomenon of burnout in teachers, in the specific context of the Portuguese educational system. The first chapter consists of a literature review study, from which it was verified the scarcity of studies available, and the inconsistency in the results found, on burnout in Portuguese teachers. It was also found that teachers’ sociodemographic characteristics, student’s misbehavior, and bureaucracy have been the most explored variables in studies with Portuguese teachers. The second chapter presents a qualitative study that analyzes the relative importance of personal, organizational and classroom dimensions associated with burnout in the Portuguese educational context. The results indicated that organizational variables are the most relevant for burnout, and that the classroom context is the one Portuguese teachers manage with greater difficulty. It was also possible to identify other variables that seem to be relevant in the Portuguese educational context. The third chapter presents a quantitative study, which aimed to explore the profiles of burned-out and nonburned- out teachers. The results suggest that teachers show an identical pattern of responses: for both, administrative tasks, fairness in rewards, student’s misbehavior, and parents, have a particularly negative impact on their well-being. The two groups of teachers differ, particularly in the importance given to the perception of threat and the perception of challenge. The main results found in the three studies are discussed, and suggestions for future investigations and interventions on burnout in Portuguese teachers are presented. |
