aulas (português e crioulo) e em duas zonas geográficas do país (divididos em zona rural e cidade);
capital do país e frequentam à escola onde o ensino é monolingue (português).
grupo do 1.º/2.º ciclos (cidade > rural).
The present study analyses the lexical knowledge of 32 Guinean students of the 1st/2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education in the two languages that co-occur directly or indirectly in the classroom (Portuguese and Creole) and in two geographical areas of the country (divided into rural and city areas); a control group of 17 university students was also constituted. The participants from the rural area group are residents of the Bubaque Sector, Bolama Region and attend school where teaching is bilingual (Portuguese and Creole) and in turn, those from the city group are residents of Bissau, the country's capital and attend monolingual teaching (Portuguese). In Guinea-Bissau, any child of school age who attends school is, at the very least, a bilingual speaker, since the mother tongue of that child is not the language of instruction. Bilingual speakers are those who use two languages alternately (Weinrich, 1968). We were interested in investigating how Guinean children and/or bilingual speakers develop lexical knowledge in these two languages and the relationship between them, with the aim of pointing out the advantages of Creole for children's learning and especially for learning Portuguese. In this sense, the frequent use of a language (amount of linguistic exposure) was pointed out as one of the predictive factors of the lexical development of bilingual speakers (Unsworth, 2016). Therefore, the present study has as one of the main objectives to verify if during the linguistic acquisition there is a balanced development in the lexical acquisition (of the productive and receptive vocabulary) in the two languages in the students who attend Guinean education. Furthermore, the study seeks to verify whether frequent contact (quantity of linguistic exposure) with one of the languages makes there is a superior lexical knowledge in that language than in the other. Through a task of semi-spontaneous production and oral comprehension (i.e. naming and identifying the image), a corpus was constituted that served for inter- and intra-group comparison. The sociolinguistic profile and data regarding the amount of linguistic exposure of the participants were taken from the sociolinguistic questionnaire. The results of the intergroup comparisons revealed that: (i) as complete groups (i.e. without subdivisions by area of residence), there are only significant differences between the participants of the 1st/2 cycles and those of the control group in the vocabulary tasks in Portuguese ; (ii) as groups subdivided by area of residence, participants from rural areas had a lower lexical performance than participants from the city area in both Portuguese tasks and in both cycles; in terms of tasks in Creole, there were only significant differences according to the area of residence in the productive vocabulary of the 1st/2nd cycle group (city > rural). On the other hand, intragroup comparisons showed that, in general, the three groups of participants present, on the one hand, receptive vocabularies superior to the productive ones in each of their languages and, on the other hand, lexical knowledge (productive and receptive) in Creole superior to lexical knowledge (productive and receptive) in Portuguese. |
