Família, quotidiano doméstico e morte nos testamentos da cidade de Lisboa (1556-1637)

Abstract

A presente dissertação visa estudar a família, o ambiente doméstico e as atitudes perante a morte em Lisboa, entre 1556 e 1637. O objetivo principal consiste em compreender o papel da família e do agregado doméstico no momento da morte do testador. Procura-se entender o peso e a interação familiar e o seu impacto na redação das últimas vontades dos outorgantes. Ao mesmo tempo procura-se compreender as atitudes dos testadores, identificando os contextos nos quais recorriam ou mencionavam os seus familiares, amigos, compadres, vizinhos, criados e pessoas escravizadas. Procura-se responder a estas questões através do estudo exaustivo dos testamentos redigidos em Lisboa entre os finais do século XVI e inícios do século XVII, recorrendo, para isso, ao Registo Geral de Testamentos (RGT), à guarda do Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo. Os testamentos analisados plasmam a diversidade social e o cosmopolitismo da cidade de Lisboa, “cabeça do reino” e capital do império. Os dados revelam que, já antes do século XVIII, a família assumia um papel fundamental no ato testamentário e que a perpetuação da honra feminina constituía uma preocupação constante dos testadores. Esta dissertação encontra-se estruturada em quatro capítulos. No capítulo I faz-se um pequeno enquadramento da cidade de Lisboa nos finais do século XVI e inícios do século XVII, atendendo sobretudo à composição social da cidade. O capítulo II apresenta e discute a fonte que serve de suporte a esta dissertação (os testamentos do RGT) e ocupa-se da identificação do tipo de testamentos e das razões que motivaram a sua redação. O capítulo II identifica e caracteriza os testadores, os testamenteiros e os herdeiros e, por fim, o capítulo IV discute as atitudes dos testadores perante a morte, analisando o papel da família e dos círculos de sociabilidade dos outorgantes no ato testamentário.

This dissertation aims to study the family, the domestic environment, and attitudes towards death in Lisbon between 1556 and 1637. The main goal is to understand the role of the family and the household at the testators' death. It seeks to understand the familiar interaction and its impact on the writing of the testators' last wills. At the same time, it seeks to identify the contexts in which testators mentioned their nuclear or extended families (being relatives, friends, neighbors, servants, and enslaved people). In order to answer these questions, we thoroughly study the wills written in Lisbon between the late sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century, using the Registo Geral de Testamentos (RGT), held at the National Archives of Torre do Tombo. Our sample reflects Lisbon's social diversity and cosmopolitanism, "head of the kingdom" and capital of the empire at the edge of the seventeenth century. Data reveal that the family played a fundamental role in the testamentary act even before the eighteenth century. The perpetuation of women's honor was a constant concern of the testators. This dissertation is structured in four chapters. Chapter I presents a brief overview of the city of Lisbon at the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, drawing particular attention to the social composition of the city. Chapter II presents and discusses the source analyzed in this dissertation (RGT) and identifies the type of wills and the reasons that motivated their writing. Chapter III characterizes the testators, the executors, and the heirs. Finally, chapter IV discusses the testators' attitudes towards death, analyzing the role of the family and the sociability circles of the testators in their wills.
