Excitatur ad verborum: normative affective data for 1034 european portuguese words in three discrete emotion categories

Abstract

Nos últimos anos várias bases de dados lexicais se tem desenvolvido em diferentes línguas tendo por base a teoria das emoções discretas e/ou a teoria dimensional. Nestas incluem-se avaliações de palavras em diferentes emoções discretas e/ou em valência e ativação. Com o presente estudo pretendeu-se caracterizar um conjunto de 1034 palavras do português europeu, para as quais já existem dados de valência e ativação, nas emoções discretas de Alegria, Medo e Nojo. Participaram no estudo 154 falantes nativos do português europeu. Os dados obtidos mostram que, tal como esperado, as avaliações de Medo e Nojo se correlacionam de forma positiva, enquanto as avaliações de Alegria se correlacionam negativamente com estas. Para além disso importa referir que as palavras de alegria relacionam-se com uma única categoria de emoção discreta e as palavras negativas podem relacionar se com mais do que uma categoria, tal e como se tem observado em prévios estudos (e.g. Ferré et al. 2017). As correlações entre valência e ativação e as diferentes categorias emocionais foram sempre estatisticamente significativas, sendo que, a valência se correlaciona positivamente com avaliações mais de Alegria, mas negativamente com avaliações de Medo e Nojo. Por outro lado, a ativação correlaciona se de forma negativa com avaliações de Alegria e de forma positiva com Medo e Nojo. Esta base será de grande utilidade para aqueles investigadores interessados no estudo dos efeitos da emoção no processamento de palavras e avaliar assim qual das duas teorias mais influentes sobre o processamento emocional se ajusta melhor aos dados (i.e., a teoria das emoções discretas ou a teoria dimensional).

In recent years several lexical databases have been developed in different languages based on the theory of discrete emotions and/or the dimensional theory. These include evaluations of words in different discrete emotions and/or in valence and arousal. The present study aimed to characterize a set of 1034 European Portuguese words, for which valence and arousal data already exist, in the discrete emotions of Happiness, Fear and Disgust. 154 native speakers of European Portuguese participated in the study. The data obtained show that, as expected, the Fear and Disgust assessments are positively correlated, while the Happiness assessments are negatively correlated with these. Furthermore, it should be noted that Happiness words are related to a single discrete emotion category and negative words can be related to more than one category, as has been observed in previous studies (e.g. Ferré et al. 2017). The correlations between valence and arousal and the different emotional categories were always statistically significant, with valence being positively correlated with assessments of Happiness, but negatively with assessments of Fear and Disgust. On the other hand, activation is negatively correlated with Happiness assessments and positively with Fear and Disgust. This database will be of great use to those researchers interested in studying the effects of emotion on word processing and thus evaluating which of the two most influential theories on emotional processing best fits the data (i.e., the discrete emotion theory or the dimensional theory).
