domínio do conhecimento específico.
No
respectivas professoras.
In the first chapter of this dissertation, I discuss the idea that, in school contexts, literacy, understood as the process of making meanings with written language, is not only a transverse practice but also a plural and situated one as it implies the use of different varieties of language, each defined by a specific content domain. I also argue that, due to its situated character, the varieties of language that are used to represent knowledge in school diverge from those children have naturally acquired when they enter school, with which they represent the meanings emerging from ordinary reality. The situated dimension of school language is empirically supported in this chapter by the description and analysis of the use of anaphoric demonstratives, showing its adequacy for the representation of variables of meaning realized in texts that are usually read and written in the different school subjects. In the second chapter, I assume the idea that the sucessful school learning depends on the learning of the singularity of the linguistic patterns that are used to represent meanings in school texts, thus defending that the object of the pedagogy of literacy, as it is expected to be carried out in the language class, is precisely that linguistic singularity. I argue that the implementation of a pedagogy that aims to promote the teaching and learning of the language of schooling may increase the school success of all students. Also in the same chapter, I fully describe a proposal to structure literacy pedagogy in four principles, namely ‘situated practice’, ‘explicit teaching’, ‘critical framing’ and ‘transformed practice’, which I support linguistically and psychologically. In the third chapter, I introduce the empirical study, which was primarily instigated by the difficulties that Portuguese students show in literacy. The study aspired to characterize the literacy teaching and learning context, as literacy difficulties have been attributed in the relevant literature to the setting of contexts where a continuity lacks between students’ learning difficulties, which are put down to the singularity of the language of schooling, and the pedagogical practices carried out by their teachers, which are not considered to be the most adequate to deal with those difficulties. As a consequence, the investigation involved two sub-units of analysis of the literacy teaching and learning context, each associated with a specific aim: (i) students’ capacity to make meanings with language patterns that are typical of school texts in order to better know the difficulty level that they show in that process; (ii) the pedagogy of literacy that is implemented by their teachers in order to describe it. In the study, I followed a multiple case research strategy, involving four literacy teaching and learning contexts comprising two third-year and two fourth-year classes of students and their teachers. In the fourth chapter, I present the results of the characterization of the first of those sub-units of analysis. It was based on the quantitative (and qualitative) analysis of data collected with a test specifically created for the research, which focused exclusively on the comprehension of anaphoric demonstratives in different texts that are usually used in school. Those results reveal that making meanings with those linguistic structures caused students many difficulties, although varying in line with students’ school year. In the fifth chapter, I present the results of the analysis of teachers’ literacy pedagogy. It was based on the qualitative analysis of data collected by interviewing the teachers and by asking them to develop a set of comprehension activities that they might carry out in their classes with the same texts used in the comprehension test. The analysis shows that teachers do neither truly recognize ‘language’ as an object of teaching and learning, nor, consequently, design and put into action a truly adequate pedagogy to help students overcome their linguistic difficulties. The final chapter of this dissertation presents the main conclusion that emerges by bringing back together the results of the analysis of both sub-units, namely that the literacy teaching and learning contexts that were studied indeed show a lack of continuity between students’ linguistic needs in the process of making meanings with the texts used in school and the pedagogical practices carried out by their teachers, and discusses some of the explanations that were found to this state of affairs. I end up by arguing that these results corroborate empirically the theoretical propositions that sustained the research in the first place. Accordingly, I sustain that the most important breakthrough of the research hereby presented is the support, and, thus, generalization, of a theoretical framework on (the pedagogy of) literacy, and discuss paths of future research and intervention that I believe to be widely unlocked by such theoretical framework. |
