Arquitetura do desastre: o hiperobjeto em Barcelos

Abstract

O presente trabalho académico visa encontrar relações entre o hiperobjeto, enquanto conceito resultante das relações espaciais que excedem as suas definições aristotélicas, e as mudanças arquitetónicas que lhe correspondem. Segundo Timothy Morton, no livro “Hyperobjects: Ecology After the End of the World” (2013), o hiperobjeto é uma entidade sem limites tridimensionais mas, no entanto, produz um impacto distinto no território. Desde desastres naturais a incidentes em grande escala, o seu resultado será proveniente da enunciação de um fenómeno situado entre o real e o metafísico. Podendo até associar as consequências do hiperobjeto enquanto exemplo arquitetónico, neste trabalho procuraremos interligar as suas características espaciais a fenómenos maioritariamente invisíveis. Com efeito, pretendemos correlacionar o impacto do hiperobjeto com a reação causada pela arquitetura e avançar para uma definição mais detalhada e concisa do hiperobjeto, em contraste com a sua noção forçosamente ambígua. Assim, o trabalho tenta captar o metafísico, simulando as suas características, transformando-se o próprio hiperobjeto. A dissertação está dividida em dois volumes: o primeiro (I) é um enquadramento teórico; e o segundo (II) corresponde a um caso prático. O corpo principal do volume I é dividido em três capítulos (de “O Hiperobjeto” a “A Catástrofe”), que gradualmente introduzem vários temas e fornecem ângulos diferentes sobre o Hiperobjeto. O volume II apresenta e disseca um objeto arquitetónico, um silo abandonado em Barcelos, e investiga-o com os instrumentos analíticos introduzidos no primeiro volume.

The present academic work aims to find relationships between the hyperobject, as a concept resulting from spatial relationships that exceed its Aristotelian definitions, and the architectural changes that correspond to it. According to Timothy Morton, in the book "Hyperobjects: Ecology After the End of the World" (2013), the hyperobject is an entity without three-dimensional boundaries but nevertheless produces a distinct impact on the territory. From natural disasters to large-scale incidents, its result will be derived from the enunciation of a phenomenon situated between the real and the metaphysical. By associating the consequences of the hyperobject as an architectural example, in this paper we will try to interconnect its spatial characteristics to mostly invisible phenomena. Indeed, we intend to correlate the impact of the hyperobject with the reaction caused by architecture and move towards a more detailed and concise definition of the hyperobject, in contrast with its necessarily ambiguous notion. Thus, the work attempts to capture the metaphysical by simulating its characteristics, becoming an hyperobject itself. The dissertation is divided into two volumes: the first (I) is a theoretical framework; and the second (II) corresponds to a practical case. The main body of volume I is divided into three chapters (from "O Hiperobjeto" to "A Catástrofe"), which gradually introduces various themes and provides different angles on the hyperobject. Volume II presents and dissects an architectural object, an abandoned silo in Barcelos, and investigates it with the analytical tools introduced in the first volume.
