dc.description.abstract | the chapter argues that Portugal perceives itself as having a European, Atlantic and Lusophone identity and a universalist vocation. Its identity is embodied in the three great geopolitical spaces that it integrates – European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries – and the universalist vocation comes from its historical past (imperial and overseas) and has a reflection in the diaspora. Portuguese foreign policy is consistent with these pillars, favouring multilateralism as a way of insertion in the international system that is increasingly globalised. A departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union and United States growing unilateralism, as dictated by the Trump Administration, are new challenges facing Portugal, a traditional ally of the two Western powers. | por |
