A mediação da memória pela mídia britânica na Grande Guerra Mundial

Abstract

A construção da memória individual e coletiva está presente na nossa sociedade desde do momento que a humanidade reconheceu a si mesma como uma estrutura social. Mas, como exatamente a memória é formada? A memória tem sido moldada através dos tempos por ocorrências históricas e também por uma ampla gama de elementos. Fatores como ideologias governamentais, relações sociais e incapacidades do cérebro humano são somente alguns dos elementos responsáveis para a construção da memória individual ou coletiva. Embora os componentes mencionados anteriormente tenham um grande papel na percepção e na construção da memória, talvez o grande responsável pela formação da memória seja a midia. Em um senso mais abrangente, a midia é multifacetada, composta de elementos como anúncios e propaganda e também a narrativa de ocorrências hist5ricas em vários formatos, agências de notícias ou uma elite ideológica governamental e não-governamental. Por vezes, a mídia pode moldar ou re-moldar a construção humana da memória de forma que esta e confundida com a verdade objetiva. Até a recente propagação de news, as pessoas não estavam atentas para a forma que a propaganda poderia controla suas vidas, embora a estrutura social contemporânea tenha sido intensamente imersa em um jogo de controle pela midia. Assim, isso é vital para clarificar a importância da midia na construção da memória e como isso manipula a percepção humana do meio social. Para finaliza, esta tese irá apresentar e avaliar a) a estratégia de propaganda utilizada pelo governo britânico na Primeira Grande Guerra b) a diferença entre verdade objetiva e memória e sua importância na construção das percepções da memória individual e coletiva. O objetivo principal é mostrar que a memória coletiva nem sempre confim a verdade, especialmente em situações de conflito,

The construction of individual and collective memory has been present in our society since mankind recognized itself as a social structure, but how exactly is memory formed? Memory has been shaped through the ages by historical occurrences and also by a wide range of disparate elements. Factors such as governmental ideologies, social relationships and human brain (dis)abilities are just some elements which are responsible for the construction of an individual or collective memory. Although the components mentioned before have a great role concerning perception and memory construction, perhaps the greatest responsible factor for memory formation is the media. In its broad sense, media is multi-faceted, composed of elements such as advertising and propaganda and also the narrating of historical occurrences in various formats by governments, news agency broadcasters or elite ideological groups-governmental and non-governmental. Sometimes, media can shape or reshape the human construction of a memory in a certain way so that it is mistaken for objective truth. Until the recent propagation/highlighting of fake news, people were not aware of how propaganda could control their lives. However, the contemporary social structure has always been intensely immersed in a play of control by the media. Thus, it is vital to clarify the importance of media in memory construction and how it manipulates human perception of the social environment. To this end, this thesis will present and evaluate a) the strategy of domestic propaganda used by the British government in the First World War and b) the difference between objective truth and memory and its value inside the process of individual and collective memory construction. The main objective is to show that collective memories do not always contain the truth, especially in a conflict situation.
