The acquisition of communication is essential for the overall development of the child. Communication problems at an early age can negatively influence the child's behavioral, socio-emotional and cognitive development. Given the high prevalence of Portuguese children with communication difficulties, it is pertinent to understand how their expressive communicative development occurs, and thus to identify early at-risk cases that present an atypical pattern of development. For this, the use of statistically accurate and valid instruments is mandatory. The Early Communication Indicator (ECI) is an instrument that has been recently adapted for the Portuguese population, and that can support the analysis of the expressive communicative development of Portuguese children at early ages. Thus, the ECI-Portugal was administered to a sample of 187 children aged between 6 and 42 months, from the Northern region of Portugal. The results show that between 6 and 18 months’ children produce mainly gestures and vocalizations, with the first words emerging; between 18 and 30 months’ children continue to produce gestures and vocalizations, with a significant increase in word production and the emergence of the first combination of words; between 30 and 42 months, the production of gestures and vocalizations decreases considerably and the production of sentences increases notably. Statistically significant differences are found between the three age groups in the results obtained. The results of this work reinforce the usefulness of the ECI-Portugal for the assessment of the communicative development of Portuguese children at early ages, over time. |
