No
The continuous increase in internet usage led, in 2022, to a total electricity consumption of around 250 TWh by all the data centers in the world. This amount corresponds to about 1.5% of all electricity consumed worldwide and about five times the total annual consumption of Portugal. Specifically in the telecommunications sector, the growing energy needs of the telecommunications centers, included in the group of data centers, have resulted in a considerable increase in the electricity bill for companies. In order to reverse this trend, there has been a growing investment in more efficient technologies, e.g. for the cooling of base stations of telecommunications. In this dissertation the choice was for a geothermal energy system that uses the ground as a heatsink. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was the design of a geothermal heat exchanger system capable of replacing the air conditioning system present in a telecommunications base station located in Celorico de Basto. The geothermal heat exchanger designed is a closed-loop system with a vertical borehole U configuration and water as the geothermal fluid. After reviewing existing sizing models, a final design for the geothermal heat exchanger was obtained with a depth of 108 meters, and initial cost and annual operating cost estimates were associated with it. On the other hand, the increasing implementation by technology giants of free cooling in their data centers has made it relevant to carry out a feasibility study for the station under analysis. Thus, this study demonstrated the enormous potential of this technology, when combined with a small auxiliary cooling system, with two alternatives being designed, a geothermal heat exchanger system and an air conditioning equipment. Counting with the single geothermal heat exchanger, three alternative systems were therefore designed. Finally, these three alternative systems were compared both at energy and economic levels, among themselves and with the existing air conditioning system. In the short term, the most viable system for the base station under study would be the one combining free cooling and a small air conditioning unit, as the initial investment in this combined system is the lowest and is recovered in less than three years. In the long term, however, the very low operating costs of the single geothermal heat exchanger, the main focus of this dissertation, make it the most attractive solution, with annual electricity savings that can reach 90% compared to the current air conditioning system. |
