o russo Камера обскура
This thesis makes a contrastive and comparative reading of the works self-translated by the novelist Vladimir Nabokov and the poet Joseph Brodsky, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987. Exiled from Russia at different times and for different reasons, both reinterpreted their texts within the new cultural reality. The multipurpose analysis, based on Translation Studies and Comparative Literature, reveals when and why the authors have resorted to literal translation, free translation or rewriting of their work. Simultaneously, each author’s ability to integrate into the Anglophone literary system, reinventing his artistic personality, is analyzed. The body of analysis of Nabokov’s works is based on the bilateral self-translation of two novels, the Russian Камера обскура (1932) [Camera Obscura] and the American Lolita (1955). The analysis of Brodsky’s works includes three poetic self-translations of different collections, published in the United States in Russian and in English: the cycle of poems ‘Часть речи’ (1975-76) [Part of Speech], the poems ‘Пятая годовщина’ (1977) [The Fifth Anniversary] and ‘Открытка из Лиссабона’ (1988) [Postcard from Lisbon]. Finally, it will be analyzed the impact of Nabokov and Brodsky’s cultural legacy on audiovisual arts, precisely the intersection of the written texts with cinema, theatre, and dance. The film Lolita (1962) by Stanley Kubrick and the show Brodsky / Baryshnikov (2015-19) by Alvis Hermanis will be studied, regarding the transmutation of works from the conceptual to the perceptual dimension, in the light of Intersemiotics Studies |
