The rising of the world population, allied to the climatic changes leading, among other impacts, to a general rise in the incidence and dispersion of phytopathogens, demands the maintenance of control over the associated diseases in agricultural systems. This control is essentially based in conventional chemical-based fungicides that, albeit effective, provoke damages to health and environment. The creation of the European Green Deal supports the investigation of neutral, environmentally friendly alternatives, extracted from natural sources and agricultural waste. The health and production of Castanea sativa and Quercus suber, important national cultures, are dramatically endangered by ink disease and cork dieback, caused by the oomycete Phytophotora cinnamomi and the fungus Diplodia corticola. Extracts from medicinal plants with known antifungal activity are an effective alternative to chemical-based substances. Plants with known antifungal activity that grow in great volumes in the wild, like Rosmarinus officinalis and Hedera helix, could be employed in the development of low-cost, environmentally friendly biofungicides and anti oomycetes. The action of these extracts in phytosanitary control can be enhanced by the addition of mycorrhizae like Paxillus involutus, known for their ability to increase the fitness of host plants and their resistance to stress and disease. The aqueous extract of H. helix revealed no antifungal activity against the fungi or oomycetes tested. The ethanolic extract of R. officinalis revealed good antimicrobial activity against P. cinnamomi (52%), D. corticola (37%) and Colletotrichum acutatum (31%), but also against Paxillus involutus. (41%). The R. officinalis extract affected the germination of lettuce seeds at the tested concentrations. The extract didn’t show inhibitory action against P. cinnamomi infection in the in vivo assays with micropropagated Marsol (C. sativa x C. crenata) hybrid plants on substrate, but it didn’t affect them either. It seemed to also have promoted the appearance of a spontaneous, non-identified fungus with no apparent negative effect on the plant and a potential competition relationship with P. cinnamomi. With this work, a pioneer protocol of infection of micropropagated Marsol roots was obtained, allowing in the future the testing of other concentrations, extracts, and the combination with native fungi and mycorrhizae to fight the disease caused by Phytophtora cinnamomi in controlled conditions. |
