uma linguagem coloquial e próxima da compreensão e entendimento dos estudantes de Cálculo;
The present research addressed an intervention study focused at the teaching and learning of function limits in a meaningful way by students of an undergraduate licentiate course in Mathematics, relating the content of function limits with the background knowledge present in the students’ cognitive structure. An investigation was carried out about how the use of two books, which were used simultaneously with conventional didactic books and with the support of technology resources, contributed to a meaningful learning of the content of function limits of the discipline of Differential and Integral Calculus I. One of these books consisted of comics (The Manga Guide to Differential and Integral Calculus) and the other one was written in informal language (Calculus for Dummies). The study focused on the following investigation questions: 1. What knowledge, expectations or impressions do students have when they begin to study the discipline of Differential and Integral Calculus I, especially regarding the topic of function limits?; 2. What resources do professors use to teach function limits? And what is their relevance to the learning process of students of Differential and Integral Calculus I?; and 3. How can the use of information and communication resources contribute to a meaningful learning of function limits by students of Differential and Integral Calculus I? The study, by means of a teaching intervention in the form of a Study Cycle, was of a qualitative nature and its participants were beginning students of the discipline of Calculus. In this intervention, a diagnostic assessment was initially carried out and professors were interviewed regarding their teaching procedure. This phase was followed by the application of the study cycle about function limits. Finally, the Study Cycle was assessed. The data collection methods used were observation, questionnaires and interviews. Regarding the results found and the analysis of data, the lack of knowledge by the students of elementary mathematical content related to the learning of function limits was made evident, despite their predisposition and favorable expectations towards learning this topic. Also it was found that professors use personal methodology strategies, traditional teaching experience and resources such as blackboard, chalk and didactic books. It was possible to conclude that the information and communication resources that contributed to a meaningful teaching and learning of function limits were: the use of the books The Manga Guide to Differential and Integral Calculus and Calculus for Dummies as a complement to conventional Calculus didactic books, since these two books are written in informal language and are, thus, more easily understood by the students of Calculus; the production of individual and collective conceptual maps; the use of varied software for the plotting and visualization of function charts; and the use of activities and teaching methodologies based on the students’ previous knowledge, focusing on a meaningful learning of function limits. Finally, the research presents reflections about the teaching of Calculus, especially about the teaching and learning of function limits, and it is expected that this research may serve as a reference for other studies that address the same theme. |
