do resultado do trabalho.
valores intrínsecos do trabalho. The present study sought to analyze the relationship between the work values of three different generations of nurses of maternal and obstetrical health and their levels of job satisfaction. On the other hand, the work values are related to the socialization process of the employees, at work or non-work spheres. Identifying the work values of the Millenial generation, generation X and Baby Boomer generation was one of this study’s goal, as well as to realize if there are similarities or differences of values in the three generations. Finally, a second goal was to understand if these differences or similarities influence the nurses satisfaction under study. This study was based on the observation of the behavior of two types of work values: intrinsic and extrinsic values. The first concerns the importance that individuals attribute to the rewards of their own work, that is, the nature of work. Extrinsic values refer to the importance attributed to the goals that come from the result of the work (seen as an instrument to achieve certain ends). The study population consisted of ten nurses specialized in maternal health and obstetrics of health units in Famalicão, Barcelos and Braga. We chose a descriptive exploratory study, with a qualitative approach. The data collection strategy was the in-depth interviews. The main results point to the values with more visibility in the Baby Boomer generation are the extrinsic values, that is, the values in which the goals are achieved through work efforts and corresponding outcomes. The values with more visibility in generation X are the intrinsic values, that is, the values in which the goals are reached by the work itself. The Millennial generation is characterized by a balance between the previous set of values - intrinsic and extrinsic. Job satisfaction is considered to be fundamental in assuring good productivity levels. The findings show that Generation X work satisfaction is influenced by intrinsic values, whereas in the Baby Boomer generation the work satisfaction is influenced by extrinsic values. On the other hand, the Millenial generation work satisfaction is an outcome of both set of work values: intrinsic and extrinsic. As a major finding, our study highlights the importance of the family in both Millenial and X generations, while for the baby Boomers the stability is more valued. It is also demonstrated that maternal health nurses’ were satisfied in their work, due to the importance given to intrinsic values. |
