As teresinhas. O Carmelo feminino da Braga moderna e contemporânea (1766‑1902)

Abstract

Assente numa fiel devoção à santa reformadora da Ordem do Carmo, emergiu, na segunda metade do século XVIII, o convento de Santa Teresa, na cidade de Braga. Representativo dos valores e princípios espirituais evocados por Santa Teresa de Jesus, o cenóbio dedicava-se à vivência plena e rigorosa da religião, em regime de clausura. Caracterizando a vida conventual moderna, procuramos traçar a história do instituto, desde os seus primórdios até à extinção, em inícios do século XX. Ao mesmo tempo, enaltecemos o papel assistencial do arcebispo D. Gaspar de Bragança, fundador da comunidade.

Set in a faithful devotion to the holy reformer of Carmelite Order, in the second half of the eighteenth century, emerged, Saint Teresa’s convent, in the city of Braga. Representative of the spiritual values and principles evoked by Saint Teresa of Jesus, the monastery was devoted to the full and rigorous living of the religion in a cloistered regime. Featuring modern convent life, we sought to trace the history of the institute, from its beginnings to its extinction, in the early twentieth century. At the same time, we emphasize the charitable role of Archbishop D. Gaspar de Bragança, as the founder of the community.
