O Granito e os seus Fazeres: Registo dos Gestos de Transformação do Granito, em Gondomar - Guimarães

Abstract

Os elementos construtivos traçam uma infinidade de movimentos, até se encontrarem na arquitetura, encastoados sobre diferentes formas, a desempenhar determinadas funções. O presente estudo, pretende registar e refletir sobre o “saber fazer” relativos à transformação do granito em material construtivo, desde a sua formação geológica, extração e transformação industrial e manual. Nesse sentido a dissertação está estruturada em três capítulos: O Fazer da Terra, O Fazer com as Máquinas e O Fazer com as Mãos. O Fazer da Terra é dedicado ao conhecimento sobre o granito enquanto matéria prima. Neste capítulo procura-se: registar o conhecimento adquirido sobre os processos geológicos inerentes à formação e afloramento da rocha; informar a leitura das propriedades naturais da rocha, de forma a realizar escolhas de projeto conscientes; e enquadrar a amostra territorial onde é realizada a pesquisa: Gondomar - Guimarães O Fazer com as Máquinas é dedicado à exploração e transformação industrial do granito enquanto rocha ornamental. Pretende-se neste capítulo: registar os gestos relativos às principais técnicas de extração do granito; representar os movimentos de transformação industrial do granito dentro das pedreiras; e elucidar as características estéticas e funcionais dos diferentes tipos de acabamento. O Fazer com as Mãos é dedicado à arte de trabalhar a pedra. Este capítulo ambiciona: evidenciar a importância do ofício da cantaria na edificação da arquitetura nacional; apresentar considerações importantes sobre o modelo de pensamento ocidental sobre o ato de criação; por fim, registar os gestos de criação aprendidos através da execução de três objetos em pedra: A estratégia de aproximação metodológica proposta assenta, no cruzamento entre dados bibliográficos e dados recolhidos na pesquisa de campo, ou seja, a justaposição entre o conhecimento académico e o conhecimento empírico. Desse modo, a pesquisa realizada in situ, na freguesia de Gondomar – Guimarães, apresenta o conhecimento gerado e recolhido através da experiência de trabalho numa pedreira, ao longo de 6 meses, a Nital – Granito Natural, Lda., e a jornada de aprendizagem da arte de trabalhar a pedra, durante 8 meses, numa oficina de cantaria.

The constructive elements may trace an infinity of movements, until they find themselves in architecture, embedded in different forms and performing certain functions. This study aims to register and to reflect on the "know-how" related to the transformation of granite into constructive material, since its geological formation, extraction, and both industrial and manual transformation. In this sense, the dissertation is structured in three chapters: O Fazer da Terra (Making of the Earth), O Fazer com as Máquinas (Making with the Machines), and O Fazer com as Mãos (Making with the Hands). Making of the Earth is dedicated to the knowledge about granite as a raw material. This chapter seeks to: record the knowledge acquired about the geological processes inherent to the formation of the stone; inform the reading of the stone natural properties, in order to make conscious design choices; and frame the territorial sample where the research is developed: Gondomar - Guimarães. The Making with the Machines is dedicated to the exploration and industrial transformation of granite as ornamental stone. This chapter aims to: record the gestures related to the most important extraction techniques; represent the industrial transformation and movements of the granite inside the quarries; and enlighten the aesthetic and functional features of different finishes offered by manufacturers. Making with the Hands is dedicated to the art of stonework. This chapter aims to: emphasize the importance of stonemasonry in the edification of Portuguese architecture; present important considerations on the Western model of thought, about the act of creation; and finally, record the gestures of creation learned through the execution of three stone objects: The strategy of the methodological approach proposed is based on the crossing between bibliographic data and data collected in the field research, in other words, the juxtaposition between academic and empirical knowledge. With this in mind, the research carried out in situ, in Gondomar - Guimarães, presents the knowledge generated and collected during the experience of working in Nital - Granito Natural, Lda., throughout 6 months, and the journey of learning the art of stonework, for 8 months, in a stonemasonry workshop.
