e XVIII.
The aim of this dissertation is to characterize the different construction contexts of Braga Castle, using the methodology developed by the Archaeology of Architecture. The focus of this study was the donjon, its most emblematic structure, whose construction sequence was best preserved and from which it was possible to identify nine construction phases. Overall, the first two phases were related to the original construction of the castle at the beginning of the 14th century and the renovations to the structure at the end of the century, after the Castilian invasion of the city. With the loss of military functions, the transformation of the building for residential purposes marked the third phase, between the 16th and 18th centuries. The fourth and fifth phases were linked to ephemeral and social moments, at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th, respectively. The sixth, seventh and eighth phases were linked to conservation and restoration work on the monument during the second half of the 20th century. The last phase was marked by the urban art trend of the 21st century, graffiti. |
