Resumo(s)National and international literature reveals high rates of failure and drop-outs in higher education. The present study aims to analyse recent data related with failure and drop-out in engineering courses of the Minho University by comparing these with national and international rates. The results show that academic achievement rates are independent of drop-outs rates. On the other hand, students with different characteristics abandon their courses, at different moments and subjects and probably by different reasons. Taking into account several agents - institution, teachers and students - this paper presents a reflection of these results, given requirements of the Bologna Treat concerning learning processes, assessment and pedagogical practices.
